Description: Original WW1 (1917) BRITISH INFANTRY TRENCH MAP. SHEET 20 SE 1 entitled "STADEN" (Scale 1:10,000) Edition 3AThis map was produced following the Battle of Passchendaele, and it covers an area which began the Battle behind the German frontline. Therefore, earlier editions contain comparatively little by way of German defences and 'rear organisation'.However, during the Battle, the German frontline positions were pushed back so far that this area became thick with defences as it was effectively the reserve position in case of further breakthroughs. This is reflected by the sheer amount of barbed wire entanglements which could easily be thrown up to create 'ad hoc' defences in the event of hasty retreats. It's also interesting when comparing this to the preceding edition to see just how many new railway lines were added by the German defenders in order to link with the new 'rear supply' positions.Trench corrections are to 17th December 1917 and the map shows STADEN at its centre with HOUTHULST and a large area of the HOUTHULST FOREST to the West.In excellent condition. The map was produced on linen backed paper and bears a raised museum stamp (with archive serial number) as explained below....This map is one of many acquired from a private collection which was previously purchased in 2002 from The Imperial War Museum. Each item was held in the museum's duplicate archives and deemed surplus. Almost all have IWM stock numbers or stamps etc and many have been linen backed for long term conservation and storage purposes. Significant numbers were unused surplus stock when originally transferred to the museum and have never even been folded. As such, many of these original WW1 maps are in 'time capsule' condition.POSTAGE - Will be sent using Royal Mail's Guaranteed Delivery by 1pm Service which will adequately cover the insurance cost of the item.
