NUMBER OF PHOTOS: 1 COMMENTS / CONDITION: Offered is an approximately 3-1/2"x5-1/2" real photo postcard of Walt Masters, pictured in his Philadelphia Athletics uniform circa 1939. The original photo was taken by George Burke in 1939, but this card was produced some time later (no earlier than the 1950's judging by the standard Kodak back). Comes from a large collection of such postcards that we will be listing over the coming months, all having standard postcard backs but being postally unused. Wear on these, if any, is mostly confined to minor corner and edge wear, but see scans for further details including condition. BIO: Walter Thomas Masters was born in 907 in Pen Argyl, PA and died in 992 in Ottawa, CAN. He went to college at the University of Pennsylvania. He played major league baseball from 93 to 939 as pitcher for the Washington Senators (3 games in 93), Philadelphia Phillies (a single game in 937) and the Philadelphia Athletics (4 games in 939). After two years out of Organized Baseball (during which time he coached the Canadian Football League's Ottawa Rough Riders and played in the semipro St. Lawrence League) Masters was president, manager and business manager of the Ottawa Senators in the Can-Am League in 936. Masters (a Knute Rockne All-American in college) played in the NFL that year as well, appearing for the Philadelphia Eagles as a quarterback. Masters returned to the majors for limited duty in 937 and 939 returned to the NFL and played in 942 for the Chicago Cardinals as a punter-quarterback and in 943 with the Pittsburgh Carpets. After retirement, Masters did public relations work for a company in Ottawa, ON.
