Description: For your consideration is this exceptionally rare and hard to find vintage Laughing Child Play Doll produced by Georgene Novelties Company of New York City during the 1950s. This 26 inches tall doll is the creation of Georgene Averill which the namesake is printed on the back of the dolls vinyl head. Both the head and hands are vinyl with the rest being stuffed oil cloth, making it easy to surface clean. He has green sleep eyes with soft upper eyelashes and painted lower lashes. The doll features an open mouth laughing expression and you can see two lower molded teeth and the doll's molded tongue. The doll has dimples on each cheek. The molded hair is brown in color. The doll is wearing a vintage Sears blue corduroy jumpsuit (Size 12-18 Months) with an appliqué of an red anchor with a life preserver upon the chest. Condition: The doll's vinyl was a little sticky (results of polymer aging) and there was a bit of dirt which was stuck to the pieces. I've taken great care to surface clean the piece, including using a professional steamer, but some dirt had lodged into air bubbles that had popped at the surface when the doll was made. This is mostly seen on the back of the head and on the hands. There is loss to the facial feature's paint as it has faded and flecked off over the years. There is one finger the has become deattached on the palm side, but is still held in place on the opposite side. A spot is visible on the front of the left leg. I did not observe an odor.I was unsuccessful in finding a newspaper or print advertisement for this particular doll, but Doll Reference referes to the doll as "Averill Aver Baby Doll" with a year of 1958; however, the description is a bit different as this does not have vinyl legs and the markings are different. Doll Value: Antique to Modern, 8th Edition by Patricia Smith refers to this doll as "Vinyl Head Laughing Child" with an oil cloth body, but the height is 26 inches vice the 28 inches in that description.
