It rarely gets over a foot high and has a low, spreading growth habit. Utah Sweetvetch produces bright pink pea-like flowers which bloom from spring to autumn. It prefers full sun, but can handle partial shade. Rocky, well-drained soils are also the preferred conditions for this wildflower. It is great for use in rock gardens, wildflower mixes, and ground covers.Scientific Name: Hedysarum boreale.Alternate Names: Northern sweetvetch, chain-pod, northern sweet broomReclamation: Utah sweetvetch is a legume capable of fixing nitrogen from the atmosphere (Nitrogen fixation is a process whereby inorganic nitrogen-N2 found in the atmosphere is converted into organic compounds usable by the plant with the aid of Rhizobia bacteria). Eventually this nitrogen is released into the soil, thereby, improving soil quality.Description: Utah sweetvetch is a native perennial, cool season, herbaceous legume with deep taproots and several lateral roots. The main stems arise from a woody crown and may grow 1 to 2 feet tall. The leaves are compound (two or more leaflets) and hairless. Flowers can be pink, purple, or white arranged in a loose raceme. Seeds develop in a long constricted pod, with several sections. Each section contains one brown kidney-shaped seed.Adaptation: Utah sweetvetch can grow on clayey or sandy soils, however, is more adaptable to welldrained loamy soils. It is most often found on moderately saline or alkaline soils, but will grow on moderately acidic to neutral soils. Utah sweetvetch is usually found at elevations between 4000 to 8000 feet, in precipitations zones receiving 10 to 18 inches of moisture annually. It grows better with 15 inches or more of precipitation and minimum competition.PLANTING INSTRUCTONS: UTAH SWEETVETCHPlanting should be done in early spring or late fall. This is a Perennial which means it might not bloom until the second year but you’ll have it forever! Cold Stratifying might help the seeds to germinate. Please see instructions below. These are hard seeds and the cold will help break them down and aid in their germination. You can also soak for 24 hours before planting.HOW TO COLD STRATIFY SEEDSEveryone wants plants. Now. But there are a small group of seeds that require a special treatment before they will even germinate in a climate that has temperatures below freezing. This process is called “Cold Stratification.” There are two ways to accomplish this.Fall PlantingIf time is not a problem, you can put them in the ground in fall and let them go through a winter. They will sprout next year, but not flower. The following year, having gone through two winters, they will return and bloom as expected. If you are planting poppies direct sowing is recommended in late fall or early spring for zones 2-8Create a "False Winter"The second way to do this, if you want to save time, is to create a “false winter.” What this does is trick the seeds into thinking they have been in the ground for an entire year. All they need is to be in your refrigerator for at least 2 ½ months.About 3 months before spring, place seeds in a plastic bag with a handful of slightly dampened, clean peat, paper towel, or a mix of clean peat and sand.Seal and label the bag with seed name and date, then store in the refrigerator (not freezer) for at least 2½ mos. before planting in spring. (The cold period mimics a full winter’s cold.) Once your seed has been treated, it’s ready to plant when spring arrives.WE SHIP FAST & FREE!
