Description: The obsolete M1816 muskets were pressed back into service during the emergency arming of the Civil War. The muskets were modified from flint lock to percussion. Many were found to have their bayonets missing. So these bayonets were newly made during the war to fit on the reconditioned muskets. They have the original style of socket found on the original M1816 musket bayonets, but have the blade form with tapered shoulders of the Civil War era socket bayonets. This example is quite unusual in that it has a tinned finish. A very interesting bayonet.
