Three days after the passing of my mom, Carol Smith,the only child of Albert R. Kratzer and Dora. In need of writing the obituary for my mother, we needed clarification of what the initial "R" represented in Albert's full name. ~~My son and daughter in law flew from Toronto to Maine to help drive me and my husband to the funeral in Michigan. As I was presently in my 10th week of being bed ridden due foot surgery with a foot cast still on. ~~The only place that there would be an accurate record of Albert's middle name would be in the family bible that was kept in the family "hope" chest upstairs in the loft. Natasha, my daughter in law, volunteered to help me search through the hope chest to find the name for the obituary. She has always had a passion for family history and has a methodical eye for detail. SO a perfect helper! ~~This hope chest held several old family pictures and old ancient forgotten keepsakes. The hope chest was given to me from my grandmother, Dora, which my mother gave to me 20 years ago. The belongings within never being reviewed obviously for 90 years. I had quickly reorganized the albums, journals and keep sakes over the decades a few times, but never really methodically reviewing the contents. Until the need to search for my Grandfather's full name, to obtain an understanding of the "R".(Roosevelt) In doing so, I was pulling out bibles, pictures and my Albert's travel "journal" with hast and gave it to Natasha to gain insight to the understanding of the letter "R". About 20 minutes into this fun historical moment.... Natasha looks up at me and says, "Maine Mama.... Did you know you have a Babe Ruth autograph?" Not paying too much attention to what she had said.... I replied "What?" She repeated herself "Did you know you have a Babe Ruth autograph?" That time, I heard what she said..... I replied "what do you mean?" She said"I think this is Babe Ruth's autograph?" I said "No way... let me see that". AND sure enough, not only Babe Ruth's autograph but Jim Foxx's autograph captured early in his career before he was signing his future autographs "Jimmie Foxx". ~~My Grandfather was a HUGE Philly fan. I remember when I was a very little girl listening and watching him be glue to the TV watching the Philly games. His world was all about baseball as I recall of my childhood memories of my Grandfather. ~~They lived in Myerstown, PA ~~Once discovered, we had some fun with it at the dinner table that evening with the guys, sharing with them in a way to have them guess what was found in the family hope chest. Then as a family we discussed what should we do with it? And it was decided it would be nice to have it shared with an owner that truly loved the sport as my grandfather had. So it was decided wewould sell it if the price was of enough value the family would be able to have some FUN with the financial return. BUT the money would have to be spent on FUN, nothing else! That was my requirement. ~~SO with FUN leading all the discussions, a few months had passed and in discussion with my buddy, Larry Scola the owner of the neigboring business he had apassion for famous autographs. He randomly shared with me what he had uncovered about another famous autograph. Which ironically made me mention my finding of the Babe Ruth autograph. He wanted to see it so I brought it in... he was impressed with it, but knew the next step was to bring it to Atlantic City to have authenticated. He was planning on going in the fall of 2019. Well, one small challenge after another and the trip did not happen prior to the pandemic. keeping in mind Atlantic City shutdown for the pandemic. And we lost 2 years. AFTER the pandemic, Larry coordinated with our additional neighboring card shop business. .LARRY YOU CAN TAKE IT FROM THERE..... I was amazed when Luanne told be she had a Babe Ruth autograph. I am a huge baseball fan and love the Yankees. I have a passion for the history of the game, so this was right up my ally. She asked ifI wanted to see it and I couldn’t say yes fast enough. Once I saw the autograph, I knew Luanne had something special. Along with The Babe’s autograph was also Jimmie Foxx’s. They were in a journal preserved nicely for 90 plus years. I organized a trip down to James Spence Authentication (JSA) in Atlantic City to get the autographs authenticated.Just when we were making the final plans, covid had everything shut down. Two years later, As I was thinking about when to head down again, I saw Michael Morong’s card shop, Maine Sports Card Plus, was having JSA at their location(two doors down from Luanne’s State Farm) in a couple weeks. The representatives from JSA wanted me to come in earlier than anyone else once they heard what we had. The reps said it was the cleanest Babe Ruth autograph they had ever seen. It was an exciting time for everyone in the store. After hours of data research, calls to higher ups, and further analysis, the autographs passed every test in flying colors. The reps then told me I should also get a piece this nice rated. They said the average Ruth autograph is rated a 4 or 5. They mentioned the difference between one rate grade could double the price. So, after another hour of research, I was called in and told that our piece was rated an 8!! I went right over to Luanne’s shop and told her the good news. We are now looking for the right auction site or private buyer so Luanne’s family can enjoy something fun for the whole family. I feel honored to be a part of something so special. It is great how three businesses just a few doors from each other found a way to help each other in ways that were completely unexpected.
