Description: This antique, hardcover book titled "The King in Yellow" by Robert W Chambers is considered to be the first horror story and consists of 10 short stories. The first 4 are about a king in yellow rags and references the banned play by the same name as the book (the play was believed to drive people mad). This first-edition book was published in 1895 by F. Tennyson Neely in New York. It has a red cover, which is rarer than the lime green one. For this reason, some feel that the red cover is from the first printing. There are 316 pages, followed by 4 pages of advertisements. The book is in great shape, especially for an antique. The main issue I found was an incomplete split along the midline of the front endpaper (see photo). The pages have varying degrees of tanning, primarily around the edges. I did not see any stains.
