He was the first head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924 and the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1924. Under his administration, Russia, and later the Soviet Union, became a one-party socialist state ruled by communists. Ideologically a Marxist, his development of ideology is called Leninism. Lenin was born into an upper-middle class family in Simbirsk and became involved in revolutionary socialist politics after the execution of his brother in 1887. Expelled from the Kazan Imperial University for participating in protests against the Tsarist government of the Russian Empire, he devoted the following years to the study of law. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1893 and became a prominent Marxist activist. In 1897, he was arrested for sedition and exiled for three years to Shushenskoye in Siberia, where he married Nadezhda Krupskaya. After exile, he moved to Western Europe, where he became a prominent theoretician of the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (RSDLP). In 1903, he played a key role in the ideological split of the RSDLP, leading the Bolshevik faction against the Mensheviks of Julius Martov. After the failed 1905 revolution in Russia, he advocated transforming the First World War into a pan-European proletarian revolution, which, as a Marxist, he believed would lead to the overthrow of capitalism and its replacement with socialism. After the February Revolution of 1917 overthrew the Tsar and created a Provisional Government, he returned to Russia to play a leading role in the October Revolution, in which the Bolsheviks overthrew the new regime. Lenin's Bolshevik government initially shared power with the left Socialist Revolutionaries, elected councils and a multi-party Constituent Assembly, although by 1918 it centralized power in the new Communist Party. The Leninist administration carried out the redistribution of land among the peasantry, the nationalization of banks and large-scale industry. She emerged from World War I with a treaty ceding territory to the Central Powers and promoted world revolution through the Communist International. Opponents were suppressed in the “Red Terror,” a brutal campaign carried out by state security forces; tens of thousands were killed or interned in concentration camps. His administration defeated right- and left-wing anti-Bolshevik armies in the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1922 and oversaw the Polish-Soviet War of 1919–1921. In response to war devastation, famine, and popular uprisings, Lenin stimulated economic growth through the New Economic Policy in 1921. Several non-Russian countries achieved independence from the Russian Empire after 1917, but three were reunited into the new Soviet Union in 1922.
