The first paragraph on the front flap tells you what you need to know about this splendid non-fiction book: "Fred Waitzkin was smitten by chess during the historic Fischer-Spassky championship match in 1972. He began to study the game, but quickly discovered he had little talent for it. His interest was revived a decade later when his son began to play and, to the author's astonishment, within weeks was beating him." At the tender age of 6, young Josh was a prodigy. This is the moving story of the next 3 years in their lives, which Fred dedicated to educating his son about tournament play - which includes a visit to Moscow to observe the world championships. They see in person how cold-blooded the matches are and speak with the Jewish Grand Masters who were not allowed to play in the dark says of the Soviet Empire. Josh begins to absorb what he's learned about the world's best player - Bobby Fischer, disliked and self-destructive, so that his pursuit of the game never follows the icon's dark path.Steve Zallian wrote the screenplay for and directed the acclaimed 1993 film, which starred Max Pomerance as Josh, Joe Mantegna as Fred, and a supporting cast headed by Ben Kingsley, Joan Allen, Laurence Fishburne, David Paymer, William H. Macy, Laura Linney and Josh Mostel. It cost $12 million and despite rave reviews grossed under $10 million worldwide.. Of note, it received a rare 100% from Rotten Tomatoes' critics and a strong 86% from viewers. There are several different editions on eBay.
