Description: Roman Republic L. Thorius Balbus AR (Silver) Denarius (105 BC) - NGC Fine! 5/5 Strike! Obverse Depicts Juno Sospita, was the patron deity of Lanuvium, a Latin town south of Rome, and her aid was especially invoked in the pacification of the rebellious Latins. Later Juno Sospita was seen as special protector of the city of Rome during war, and she was depicted wearing a horned goatskin helmet and brandishing shield and spear. Her temple in the Forum Holitorium was vowed by the consul C. Cornelius Cethegus in thanksgiving for a victory over enemy tribes in Cisalpine Gaul and was dedicated in 194 BCE. As Juno Curritis/Curitis/Quiritis (“Protector of Spearmen”), she was worshipped by the 30 curiae (archaic military and political administrative groups), with a temple or shrine in the Campus Martius. Reverse Depicts a Bull Charging. Th Republican Minter of the coin was L. Thorius Balbus. Lucius Thorius Balbus or Thorianus was a military man and Roman monetary triumvirate. He was born at Lanuvius in an uncertain year, in Hipania, where the legate of Metellus Pius was leading an army, defeated and killed in 78 BC by Quintus Sertorius. Cicero said the following about Lucius Thorius Balbus comparing him with Regulus : Lucius Thorius was Balbus, Lanuvinus, whom you cannot remember. He lived in such a way that no pleasure could be found so exquisite that he did not abound. He was also fond of pleasures and of their kind, understanding and abundant, not so superstitious as to despise the most numerous sacrifices and festivals in his country, not so fearful of death as to be killed in battle for the sake of the state. Desires not of Epicurusit ended in division, but in its own satisfaction. He had, however, a reason for his health: he used these exercises, so that he would come to dinner both thirsty and hungry, with that food which was both the most delicious and the same the easiest to digest, wine and for pleasure and not to harm. He made use of the rest, which Epicurus denies that he understands what good is. all pain was absent, which, if present, would not bear gently, and yet he used physicians more than philosophers. Excellent color, complete strength, great grace, and finally a life full of all the variety of pleasures.
