Mint: Rome Size: 19.3 mm Weight: 3.31 grams A very nice denarius struck by the Republican moneyer, C. Vibius Pansa, who was targeted for political assassination by Sulla. The ancient Roman historian Cassius Dio, writing in the late second and early third centuries CE , recounts this: "In the consulship of Aulus Hirtius and Gaius Vibius -- for Vibius was now appointed consul in spite of the fact that his father's name had been posted on the tablets of Sulla -- a meeting of the senate was held and opinions expressed for three successive days, including the very first day of the year." (Roman History, Book 45, Section 17.1) C. Vibius Pansa was also probably the adoptive father of the C. Vibius Pansa Caetronianus who issued coins in 48 BC.
