Description: The Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust has slowly gained traction among collectors thanks to its bold tonneau case and matching steel integrated bracelet. This wonderful circa 1987 example is in pristine condition and unworn since a major overhaul by a Rolex service centre in December 2014, still retains the service stickers to side of case and case back cover. Accompanied with original presentation boxes, original Oysterquartz manual, original translation booklet, original Rolex wallets, Rolex manual booklet, Rolex hang tag, Spare link x1, and Rolex service invoice issued by Authorised service centre Kings Hill Kent U.K . Recently benefited from a battery replacement by a Rolex specialist watchmaker, fully inspected and tested, described ‘running like new’. The Oysterquartz was so robustly constructed that it lived up to the reputation of a Rolex as a “Tool watch.” It was even carried on some expeditions: in May 1978, for example, Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler climbed to the summit of Mount Everest. It was an almost impossible endeavor, but they succeeded as the first humans ever without the use of supplemental oxygen. On Messner’s arm was the Rolex Oysterquartz, which defied the tough conditions and worked flawlessly at over 8,000 meters and in icy cold. As many watch brands fought to survive the Quartz Crisis in the 1970s, several high-profile Swiss companies introduced their take on quartz watchmaking in order to remain competitive in the new era of horology. After a long five-year period of research and development, Rolex introduced the Oysterquartz model in 1977, with its inaugural in-house quartz movement. The Caliber 5035, as featured in this present example, has a date function, while the Caliber 5055 had a day-date indicator. On the outside, the thick tonneau case is very much in line with the aesthetics of the 1970s. Another interesting detail of this model is the integrated steel bracelet with a satin-finished center links, something only found on this specific Oysterquartz model. The Oysterquartz ended its production run in 2001 and has now become a collectors piece. This Oysterquartz is in beautiful condition. The case and bracelet are in pristine shape following a major overhaul by Rolex. The case and bracelet have been polished to a factory finish which is difficult to find on a 37 year old Rolex. The present watch’s ultimate rarity and attractive appearance places it amongst one of the most desirable and collectible Datejust 36 models to be offered. At its core, the 17014/17000 is the quintessential vintage Datejust: highly versatile in its looks, with limited availability. Its 36mm steel oyster case ensures comfortable wear, while its polished steel fluted bezel adds just a touch of intrigue in comparison to the chamfered and engine turned look in the collection's watches, the unique link bracelet glides on your wrist in pure elegance and much a preferred variant over the more commonly found Oyster and Jubilee bracelets. A diverse array of the dial style, including the classic configuration varying indices, and a swath of sunburst silver colour ensures there's a watch for exquisite tastes, hammering once more just how the Datejust has become so beloved by so many as one of the best all-around wearers in the World. This Rolex has it all a technically certified chronometer Quartz movement, Oyster case with a fluted bezel and a beautiful ‘sunburst’ dial fitted to a superb unique steel bracelet. In an eloquent expression of the Master Watchmakers ‘Rolex Oysterquartz’ is the perfect gentleman’s timepiece; not only functional but supremely elegant. The Original Dial: The mid 50’s into the late 80’s vintage Rolex dials are the most wonderful and exquisite examples of Rolex style, simplicity and elegance. This charming silvered sunburst dial has silver concave baton indexes with pure white lume plots sitting behind and is difficult to find and quite sought after by collectors. It contrasts beautifully with the fluted bezel and is full of character and Rolex vintage charm. The original steel lume filled baton hands and tapered ticking seconds hand complete the dial perfectly. The applied outer chapter ring has a minute track featuring aged 1/5th increments. The dial is signed ‘ROLEX OYSTERQUARTZ DATEJUST ’ SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED below ‘12’ and T Swiss T at the very bottom. Silvered raised Rolex coronet proudly sitting at ‘12’ with date window at ‘3’ o clock featuring cyclops lens. This dial is the superb pristine condition and has wonderful light aged patina giving a wonderful vintage feel. Please observe photographs carefully.
