Description: A Rebel spy in Yankeeland The thrilling adventures of Major W.P. Gorman, who was the emissary of the Confederacy to the Copperheads of the North 1861-1865 ----- edited and introduced by W. Stanley Hoole. ---------------------------------------------- Confederate Publishing Co, 1981 - First Edition ---------------------------------------------- Softcover : Overall Very Good Some age tone to the covers, but clean inside.31 pages ================================ From the preface An unnamed but enterprising reporter for the Birmingham Alabama Weekly Age-Herald, having seen Major W. Patrick Gorman, as marshal, lead the Confederate Memoiral Day Parade, April 30, 1890, and having subsequently learned of his noteworthy experiences as a Copperhead spy during the Civil War, sought an interview with him. Major Gorman, who had but recently moved to the mushrooming coal and iron city, talked freely to the newsman. He described his exciting activities among the numerous Copperhead organizations in Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Tennessee with zest, illustrating them with letters, papers and minute details which corroborated every statement he made. The results of the interviews were published verbatim in the Weekly Age-Herald. ------------------------- Noted author W. Stanley Hoole concluded his introduction with the following note : "... It must be remembered that Major Gorman was attempting to recall events which happened twenty-odd years previously, and, frankly, his memory seems now and then to have been deceiving. These facts, however, do not noticeably lessen the impact of his overall presentation of his unique wartime experiences which are reprinted here in accessible pamphlet form, for the first time, after passage of ninety years." Three pages of footnotes tie outside sources to a number of points that Major Gorman refer to in his interview. ===================================Thank you for supporting independent booksellers !
