RARE and SOLD OUT! 2019 marked the 200th anniversary of the births of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert -- a cause for celebration at the V&A. The story of the museum is closely linked to the royal couple; Prince Albert devised the Great Exhibition of 1851, and many of the exhibits went on to form the first collection of the South Kensington Museum, opened by Victoria and Albert in 1857. In 1899 the museum was renamed in their honor. This commissioned illustration by Beatriz Lostalé shows the couple dancing surrounded by celebratory items, including Queen Victoria's sapphire and diamond coronet. Designed by Prince Albert, it became one of the Queen's most important pieces, worn throughout her life on special occasions and after Prince Albert's death in 1861.
