Description: King Carlos I, who reigned 1889-1908, was known as a serious-minded monarch, following diplomatic and scientific issues closely. Financial mismanagement, however, forced the country into bankruptcy twice, leading to significant republican agitation against the monarchy. On February 1, 1908, Carlos and his eldest son were assassinated by two anti-monarchists while riding in an open carriage near the royal palace. The two assassins were immediately killed by police.
