The painting dates c1900 to slightly earlier and is presented in its original retailed frame, with the gallery label of John Mathieson and Co Edinburgh Scotland to verso. Eduardo Forlenza was born in Tore del Greco, Naples in 1861. He studied under Vincenzo Irolli (1860 – 1949), a member of the Institute of Fine Arts, Naples. from around 1880. Forlenza established his own studio in the late 19th C, working with Tito Pellicciotti (Naples, 1871 – 1950) and Luca Postiglioni (Naples, 1876 – 1936), later participating in the Florence Fine Art Exhibition of 1913 and in the Promoters of Fine Arts from 1912 to 1917. Eduardo Forlenza enjoyed enormous success as a portrait painter, especially of women, mostly portraying commoners, rustic individuals, fisherfolk, farm labourers. He was also known for his landscapes and genre scenes, drawing inspiration particularly from Irolli.
