Description: *Paul Cesar Helleu Drypoint of Ethel Barrymore* Paul Cesar Helleu (December 17, 1859 - March 23, 1927) was a French artist best known for his portraits of the most beautiful and famous women of the late 1800's and early 1900's. He was awarded the Legion d'honneur in 1904 and became one of the most celebrated artists of the Edwardian era in both Paris and London. Helleu was also the creator of the astrological ceiling decoration in New York City's Grand Central Station which he completed in 1912.Helleu usually completed five or six of each drypoint. Ethel Barrymore, one of the most famous actresses of her time became the subject of this very unique Helleu drypoint. One of these Barrymore drypoints resides on the wall of the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC. The one listed here is signed by both Helleu and Barrymore. Barrymore's signature is accompanied by a personal note that says: To Frances Wolcott, from Ethel Barrymore, 2. March 1903. This signature and note make it one of a kind artwork. Frances Wolcott was the wife of Colorado Senator, Edward Wolcott. The item also comes from the estate of stage, television and movie actress, Dolores Sutton.Please note that the art is actually dry mounted to the backing board. There are a few surface scratches when examining closely.
