Description: This listing is for the original circa 1940 Margaret Prosser Allison Allen (1913-2007) cityscape painting pictured above. About this work: A lovely WPA era cityscape with buildings, trees, and a train by American female artist Margaret Prosser Allison Allen (1913-2007). This work features a brilliant, modernist palette that highlights the color of this small town. Loose, impressionistic brushwork complements this fleeting moment as a train passes by with a billow of smoke in the foreground. Numerous colorful buildings dot the wooded town and rolling hills can be seen in the distance, rounding out the rest of the composition. Relatively little is written about Allen’s life. She received her BA and MFA from the University of Washington and also studied under artists Alexander Archipenko & Amadee Ozenfant. She exhibited six times at the Northwest Annual between 1938-1948 and over ten times at the Delaware Annual between 1942-1964. She also exhibited at the Weyhe Gallery, NYC in 1947 and the University of Delaware Faculty Group Show at the Delaware Art Museum in 1972. In addition to her art, she worked as a Design professor at the University of Delaware for several decades. In 1947, she married Ned B. Allen, who was also an educator (hence the addition of “Allen” to her name). This work is oil on canvas and is signed in the lower right and inscribed on the stretcher. It is housed in an appropriate, later frame.
