First edition of Merleau-Ponty s first book with the verso of the title page noting: Dépot Légal / 1re édition . . . 30 novembre 1942 Merleau-Ponty s first book which served as the underlying basis for his doctorate. Heavily influenced by Hegel, The Structure of Behavior rejects the popular objectivism, most evident in psychological behaviorism of the time. However, Merleau-Ponty similarly rejects the popular neo-Kantian intellectualism that would have embraced a subjectivism as the context for objectivity. Here Merleau-Ponty asserts that mind and body are not two separate substances idea and matter but rather, asserts the inseparability of the two as essential for any true understanding of the human person, both biologically and psychologically.
