From private collection!!!! Beautiful book and Print!!!! Although he is best known for his fashion photographs, Paolo Roversi is certainly not a fashion photographer. This great connoisseur of photography – which he collects with great taste –, this lover, in the best sense of the term, of books that, from his youth, familiarized him with the classics as well as with the authors of his generation, is simply a photographer. He considers each photo as a “portrait”, whether it is a face, a dress, a landscape or a coffee maker, and affirms his passion for August Sander, Diane Arbus or Richard Avedon. And of course Robert Frank, to whom he was close. Simply because he seeks to “place at the center of the world” what he photographs, which he erases in order to be able to eliminate and purify as much as possible. With great elegance. At the beginning, it was not easy. COVID 19 prevented us from seeing each other face to face and we talked through screens, which neither of us likes and which hardly lends itself to the type of exchange that is the rule, the basis and the foundation of these discussions. From the first physical meeting on the terrace of Studio Luce and despite the untimely passage of a helicopter, the speech became more fluid. Especially since the place is welcoming, that the studio, in a building from the thirties in the south of Paris, brings together living and working spaces. As if it were obvious. Complicit reunions, exchanges, sharing. And always this elegant good humor, this smile that crinkles at the corner of the eyes, this frequent and never loud laugh, this light humor, a way of not taking oneself seriously, a form of predestination to happiness as a life decision. We feel at every moment a requirement, by necessity and, just as strong, the indispensable freedom that opens the doors. The rhythm is supple, musical, both firm in its convictions and never arrogant. Perfect and precise French for the most Italian of Parisians, or, perhaps, the most Parisian of Italians. It doesn’t matter, in fact. Yes, an obvious elegance. As, later, in his bright apartment on the top floor of a beautiful building. An inhabited universe, neither in disorder nor really tidy, especially not arranged. A world of books, from the entrance and in almost every room. Books of all types, poetry, novels, philosophy, literature, photography obviously, art books and remarkable bound copies of beautiful old editions – seen an original of Paul et Virginie, a 1776 work on Italy with magnificent watercolors or a copy of the Complete Works of Julius Caesar – which come from his wife, Laetitia, a former top model descended from the typographic printers Firmin Didot. A world of photographs, everywhere, in every room, on the wall or on wooden storage units with lattices. Few photographs of the master of the place, ultimately, but many nuggets, from Robert Franck – many – to Diane Arbus – including the very rare pregnant self-portrait – to Kertész – a small unpublished print of a view of Paris –, several Shoji Ueda or Louis Faurer. And so many others, mixed in with a few family photos. Facing a wall entirely covered in photographs, overwhelming, a white Lucio Fontana, of an unusually large format, very pure with a single vertical notch. We see, in a library whose glass doors protect particularly precious books, a small square package, mysterious packaging from the very beginnings of Christo. Other paintings on the wall, including one by a friend. Here, nothing is decoration, we live in an environment where art naturally finds its place so that we live with it. We breathe it. But it is neither a museum, nor a show, much less a demonstration. No logic, no hierarchy, rather a kind of self-portrait made of fragments of memories, moments of a life, preserved emotions. We did not, in the end, talk much about fashion. Probably because it is not really the subject, even if the one who says he was strongly influenced by August Sander is catalogued as a "fashion" photographer and that it is his main professional activity. But it is obvious that for the one for whom "everything is a portrait" the challenge, the only one, is photography. So light. And an essential freedom that we find in the way of evoking and his practice and memories, of speaking without always revealing himself, with a modesty that is not a calculation or a secretiveness. Speech is fluid, emotions and memories return, convictions, comments, without affectation. We talk to each other. Just between us.
