Description: John B Tabb (1923 – 2001) Untitled “Night Train” Not dated 1950’s Water Color Painting Conservation includes 18 by 24 Rag Board matting with PH neutral back board. No appearance of light strike on paper edge. Image is clean no tears or repairs attached with linen hinge tape with original vintage tape remnants and adhesive on boarders. Paper: 13 7/8 x 20 in. (watercolor heavy weight ) Mat Site: 12 5/8 x 19 in. Tabb attended Purdue University and then studied with Arnold Blanch at the Meinzinger Art School in Detroit. He eventually taught there and at Marygrove College in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. He was on staff at General Motors starting in the 1950’s as Assistant Director in Public Relations and was instrumental in the design of graphic publications for the company. Tabb retired as Manager of Art Production and Corporate Communications for Public Relations. John was active in the Scarab Club since the 1940’s and President from 1996-1997, and served on the Scarab Club Board for multiple years. He is the only artist to date to win four Scarab Club Gold Medals in 1952, 1954, 1956, and 1994. John won an Honorable Mention at the 1952 Annual New Year Show at The Butler Institute of American Art. He also won first prize for his painting at the Michigan State Fair and first prize from the Michigan Watercolor Society. Tabb was a member of the Michigan Academy of Art, Science, and Letters, the Bloomfield Arts Association, and the Michigan Watercolor Society. He was inducted into the American Watercolor Society in 1950 and would become the travel chairman. He had his first solo exhibition with the Detroit Artists Market in 1952 and his work was exhibited in the Michigan Watercolor Society’s Traveling Exhibition in 1954. In 1955 he participated in the Detroit Watercolor Society Exhibition held in the old downtown J.L. Hudson’s building. Since the 1950’s, his work has also been shown at annual American Watercolor Society Exhibitions, and Detroit Institute of Arts / Michigan Artists Exhibitions ,1948 (Quarry) ,1949 (Easy Entry ) ,1950 (Eternal Cycle (Water Color) The Scarab Club Prize, 1951 (The Mill) The Scarab Club Prize, 1952. Factory with Blue Windows, 1954 (Refinery), 1955 (Old Bookstore) 1956 (American Landscape) Additionally, his work was part of the Ohio Watercolor Society Exhibitions, and Artist Market Exhibitions, as well as at the Butler Art Institute. His work is in the collection of the Michigan Historical Museum as well as several private collections. The Scarab Club held a retrospective exhibition of his work in 1992. In 1997, he exhibited his work in the Scarab Club’s All Member exhibition as a featured artist. In 2008, his work was exhibited at the Detroit Athletic Club Show entitled “Lower Great Lakes Watercolorists.”
