*GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (1953) COPY Final Script Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell

Description: This is a copy of a vintage Revised Final Draft copy script (not a vintage original script) from the classic 1950's musical comedy/romance, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, released in1953 by 20th Century-Fox and directed by Howard Hawks. Based upon the musical comedy by Anita Loos and Joseph Fields, showgirls Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell) travel to Paris, pursued by a private detective hired by the suspicious father of Lorelei's fiancé, as well as a rich, enamored old man and many other doting admirers. The cast includes Charles Coburn, Elliott Reid, Tommy Noonan, George Winslow, Marcel Dalio, Taylor Holmes, Norma Varden, and Howard Wendell. Written by Charles Lederer and dated November 13, 1952 as revised December 3, 1952, it consists of 118 pages on white stock that were 3 hole punched and later punched for a plastic comb binding. It is complete in overall very fine condition with the words "Revised 12/3/52" handwritten in black ink on the bottom right corner of the title page. A prior owner had affixed a rubber stamp (ORIGINAL) on the back of the last page and someone had placed White Out on the bottom of the last page to hide the bleed-through from the rubber stamp. It is bound with a white comb binding with a yellowed clear front cover and textured black cardstock back cover. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was Jane Russell's only film with Marilyn Monroe and they got along well. According to Russell's 1985 autobiography, she called Monroe "Blondi" and was often the only person on the set who could coax Monroe out of her trailer to begin the day's filming. When told she was not the star of the film, Marilyn was quoted as saying: "Well, whatever I am, I AM the blonde." Monroe reportedly suggested the line "I can be smart when it's important, but most men don't like it." In her very last interview (10 years after making Gentlemen Prefer Blondes), Monroe recalled the lack of respect studio execs had for her, but made a point of mentioning co-star Jane Russell: "I remember when I got the part in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Jane Russell, she was the brunette in it and I was the blonde. She got $200,000 for it, and I got my $500 a week, but that to me was, you know, considerable. She, by the way, was quite wonderful to me." According to Marni Nixon, the studio initially wanted Monroe's entire voice dubbed, as they thought her voice was silly. Nixon thought that was "awful," as she felt Monroe's voice suited her persona so beautifully. Nixon told The New York Times in March 2007 that she ended-up only dubbing the operatic "no, no, nos" at the beginning of the song and the phrase "these rocks don't lose their shape." For the "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" musical number, Monroe was originally going to be dressed in nothing but bands of black velvet and masses of rhinestones, creating the illusion of a woman-sized diamond necklace. However, this design was deemed too revealing and vetoed by the studio in favor of the now iconic pink dress.
