The theme of the engraving is purely romanticist. a young man in religious attire and with a tonsure says goodbye to the portrait of his beloved before going to retire forever in the monastery. The image has a series of elements that refer to the gallant life that the young man abandons, such as the letters on the table, probably love ones; the elegant military uniform that he abandons for the monastic habit; the guitar that represents the happy songs that will be replaced by religious songs; also the women at the table and the view from the window represent elements of the world that he abandons.
