In my mind its in the same top-tier with the classics of science fiction and fantasy, standing shoulder to shoulder with likes of Tolkien's masterpiece Lord of the Rings and Azimov’s Foundation Trilogy. People often view it as a pure science fiction novel - which it is - but it is so much more. It is a commentary on religion, myth, fanaticism, love, hate, wisdom passed through generations, loyalty, courage, betrayal, and the complicated interconnectedness and balance of planetary ecosystems. And that is just scratching the surface! If you're not ready for a book with that level of complexity -- one requiring you to engage your brain at all times -- I recommend you take a pass. If you’re ready for a mind-bending, sweeping narrative with interesting characters, good writing and a satisfying plot, this may be the perfect book for you. I first read it 48 years ago, not long after it was published, and I was hooked. I re-read it two years ago and it felt as relevant today as it did in 1975. In 1980 I recommended it to my English Literature girlfriend (later wife) who said (with her nose in the air) ‘I don’t really like science fiction that much.’ But I persisted, and she decided to read it. 16 books-in-the-series-later she admitted that it was one of her favorite books of all time (and she has read literally thousands). If I could give it 6 stars I would. 58 people found this helpful. Pallav Kumar a year ago "Dune" is a science fiction novel written by American author Frank Herbert, first published in 1965. The book is set in a distant future in a universe ruled by feudal noble houses that control planets, and where a precious spice called "melange" is the most valuable commodity in the galaxy. The novel explores themes such as politics, religion, ecology, and the balance of power between different groups. The story centers around the young nobleman Paul Atreides, whose family is appointed to rule the desert planet Arrakis, the only known source of the valuable spice. Paul's father, Duke Leto Atreides, accepts the appointment despite knowing that it's a trap set by their enemies, the Harkonnens, who seek to destroy the Atreides family and take over the planet. The story follows Paul's journey as he navigates the political intrigue and danger on Arrakis, where he becomes the leader of the native people known as the Fremen and discovers his true destiny as a messiah-like figure known as the Kwisatz Haderach. At its core, "Dune" is a novel about power and the struggle for control over resources. The spice melange is not just a valuable commodity but also a drug that enhances human abilities, making it an essential component of interstellar travel and the political and economic systems that rely on it. The book also explores the ecological impact of human activity and the consequences of exploiting resources without considering the long-term effects. Another significant aspect of the book is the exploration of religion and spirituality. The Fremen, who live in the harsh desert environment of Arrakis, have developed a unique culture and religion that centers around the belief in a messiah figure who will bring them salvation. Paul's journey to becoming the Kwisatz Haderach, a figure that fulfills the Fremen's prophecy, is both a personal and a religious transformation. "Dune" has been praised for its intricate world-building and the depth of its characters. The novel features a large cast of memorable characters, each with their motivations and desires. The book also includes a glossary and appendices that provide additional details about the world of "Dune," including the history, religion, and politics of the various groups. In conclusion, "Dune" is a classic science fiction novel that explores themes of power, politics, religion, and ecology in a richly detailed and immersive universe. The book's complex characters, intricate world-building, and thought-provoking themes have made it a beloved and influential work in the science fiction genre. 35 people found this helpful. Suman Sourabh 3 years ago Dune ... the name is thrilling in itself. A lot can be said about this beautiful world-building by Frank Herbert. It had me thrilled from the start. This is truly an example of the sheer brilliance of a science fiction novel. The characters are super good in this book. The protagonist was a complex one that even his mother couldn't understand at times. The side characters were likeable too, each one of them having their own characteristics. The setting and complexities of the habitat in which Arrakis, the desert planet is set are commendable. Surely, it would have taken a lot of imagination to create something like this. But the best thing about this novel was that how it connects with the philosophies of real-life and how it can impact an individual. 96 people found this helpful. It led to me getting the Dune books. I finally finished reading this and it was hell of a ride. 500+ pages of lore. The book initially slaps some aliens words like “Bene Gesserit”, “Kwisatz Haderach”, “Gom Jabbar”, “Kul Wahad” into your face in the first pages of the book. Don’t worry because all of them will make sense when you get further into the story. Masterpieces can have flaws and Dune is a part of them, the dialogue is its major problem. Some scenes are unnecessary long so I understand that movie adaptations are forced to cut down the story length. Frank Herbert’s works were ahead of their time and no other sci-fi stories are capable of reaching Dune’s world-building. Overall I’d give this book a 9/10. This book can be slightly difficult to read and I somewhat recommended amateur English speakers to read it since it uses lots of big words and metaphors for them to learn 4 people found this helpful.
