This exhibition, realised with the cooperation of some 150 holders, boasts an unprecedented scale for an exhibition of Jomon clay figurines, bringing together a large number of clay figurines from all over Japan. The exhibition is the largest ever exhibition of Jomon clay figurines in Japan, with a total of 320 pieces, including 3 national treasures, 21 important cultural properties and Jomon pottery.The Power of Dogu" exhibition held at the British Museum in 2009 and the return exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum attracted large crowds, and this year, the Jomon clay figurines are attracting increasing attention, with a fourth national treasure being newly designated as a clay figurine. This exhibition and this publication fully respond to this growing interest. The colour illustrations in the first chapter of the book bring into sharp relief the forms of these clay figurines, which until now have only been seen in documentary form, from a new angle through photographs taken by photographer Takeshi Fujimori.
