Description: Coralberry Shrub, Symphoricarpos orbiculatus, Seeds Hardy, Adaptable, Easy to Grow, Ornamental Fruit, Fall Color, Attracts Birds, Exfoliating Bark, Wildlife Food/Shelter, Winter Interest Coralberry is a small deciduous shrub which typically occurs in open woods, fields, pastures and thickets. It spreads by runners to form impenetrable thickets in the wild. It typically grows 2 to 5 feet tall with arching stems, shredding bark on older wood and reddish purple to brown branchlets. Its smooth, dull green leaves are opposite and roughly oval, tapering about equally to tip and base, up to 2.5 inches long but often less than 1 inch, with smooth, turned down margins and a rounded or broadly pointed tip. Each leaf has a short petiole up to 1/4 inch long. At the axils of some leaves, bell-shaped, 1/4 inch white flowers with a pink tinge appear in summer along the stems in dense clusters and in spikes at the stem ends. Flowers give way to showy clusters of round, 1/4 inch coral-pink to purple berries which mature in autumn. Berries persist through most of the winter providing excellent color and interest to the winter landscape. Berry-laden winter stems may be cut for indoor floral arrangements.
