Description: CIA: The Inside Story. Tully, Andrew. NY: William Morrow & Co., 1962. Hardcover, 276 pages. Cold War era history of the Agency. "NO ADMITTANCE BY ORDER OF THE COMMANDING OFFICER. This inscription, of course, had been lettered on the door by the American tunnel diggers to give the Reds pause even after they discovered the wire tap. After some confusion and some hot words through channels, permission finally was received to investigate the mysterious door, and the Soviet troops broke it down to reveal the tunnel. Meanwhile, however, an alarm had been sounded the moment the first Soviet hand touched the wiretapping apparatus and the tunnel had been cleared of all personnel. Immediately, the Soviet Union dispatched a note to Washington demanding punishment for those persons who had dug the tunnel "to engage in subterranean espionage." The Communist press charged that the wire tapping violated the sovereign rights of the German Democratic Republic, and claimed that Mrs. Eleanor Lansing Dulles, the State Department German expert and sister of Allen Dulles, had visited the tunnel on two occasions "to check its efficiency." But, curiously, both the Soviet and East German press heaped praise on the project. They described it as "bold, daring . . . audacious . .. skillful ... and difficult." And shortly the Soviet opened the tunnel to visitors as a tourist attraction, with guides to explain the intricacies of its wiretapping operations. It was closed to the public June 9, 1956, with the announcement that forty thousand members of "worker delegations from East Germany and the Soviet Union" had seen this triumph of American espionage. The Communist tourists had a right to be impressed by what they saw. In a field where elaborateness of operation is common, the Berlin spy tunnel was one of the modern wonders of espionage."
