Description: NOTE: Please excuse the flashbulb reflections off the angles and bright glaze of the plate. This exquisite 8-3/4" inch diameter dark blue Staffordshire transferware plate is a delightful addition to any collection of early antique blue and white transfer printed ceramics. Featuring a scene in the Pekin pattern, it showcases the intricacies of Chinoiserie style. The plate was created by the renowned maker Clews in the early 19th century, circa 1820, and is an original piece with a beautiful dark blue color. It is in absolutely beautiful estate condition with NO cracks, NO repairs and NO restorations. There is a tiny pit or glaze fleck in the lower portion of the scene in the well area, as shown in the photos. Period appropriate manufacture stilt marks are visible on front and back. The glaze retains a bright shine with minor utensil marks in the well area, visible only when angled towards a bright light source under close scrutiny. The backside shows the impressed Clews maker's mark. The plate's country/region of origin is the United Kingdom. This plate is a wonderful representation of the early 19th-century Staffordshire region of potters and an excellent addition to any antique collection.
