Description: Banishment of Themistocles -1846 Greek History Engraving 1846 Ancient History Wood Engraved Illustration Engraved by W. Roberts Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Themistocles was an Athenian politician and general. He was one of a new breed of non-aristocratic politicians who rose to prominence in the early years of the Athenian democracy. As time progressed, Themistocles had begun to accrue enemies, and had become arrogant; moreover his fellow citizens had become jealous of his prestige and power. Eventually, in either 472 or 471 BC, he was ostracized. Themistocles then fled from Greece, apparently never to return, thus effectively bringing his political career to an end. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
