Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston were part of the legendary "Nine Old Men" at Disney that were the heart of the Disney animation world from the early 1930s through the late 1970s. After retirement the pair co-authored four books including this one. In 1939, Walt Disney had written in story notes that he'd like to see an edition of Bambi as an illustrated book full of the animators sketches. In 1990 it happened. Frank Thomas started working at Disney in 1934 as employee No. 224 and retired 44 years later in 1978. He worked on nearly 20 feature animated films including Bambi, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and One Hundred and One Dalmations as well as many shorts. He used live animals to draw his characters to capture authenticity and character. Ollie Johnston joined Disney as an animator in 1935 and retired 43 years later in 1978. He worked on 24 feature films including Bambi, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia, Song of the South, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Lady and the Tramp, and Sleeping Beauty as well as many shorts.
