Description: This antique, hand-tinted, full plate tintype is believed to be a portrait of a Civil War "Copperhead", a Confederate sympathizer who lived in Union areas in the north of the country. The tintype measures approximately 8.5" x6". Copperheads wore the head of a copper “Lady Liberty” cent cout out and made into a stick pin (see copper colored painting above coat button and below neck). Copperheads also wore Southern rosettes (sometimes also called cockades), often in full color (often red or blue). Union rosettes were more likely tri-color than southern ones. The Carolinas seemed to have focused on red rosettes, often with a brass button or an agricultural symbol like a small pine cone in the middle. The red rosette in this tintype seems to have such a symbolic item hand-colored in the middle. This gentleman may have originated from either North or South Carolina. The tintype is in good condition but there has been some rubbing in the front and pending to the corners. It seems to have been glued into an album and there is still paper attached to the back.
