Description: Antique ~Lot of 4~ Authentic Japanese Katagami Textile Precisely Hand Cut Mulberry Paper Stencil Sheets. Katagami is the Japanese craft of handmaking stencils for pattern making. Persimmon juice lacquer with several layers of mulberry paper, along with silk tread are used to reinforce delicate open-cut elaborate patterns. These stencils are officially designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. They were created for the designing long bolts of fabric for kimonos, & other beautiful textiles, especially on silk & wool. Today, these are coveted as collectibles & I have also seen these as individually framed art which makes a great display. Imagine the days it must take to create only one of these, look closely at the fine-silk thread connectors, incredibly artistic. Lovely. Estate sale find from a distinguished private collection with so many amazing items, really something for one and all. Condition is used in surprisingly very good shape, no missing parts or breaks, showing wear as expected with usage (see pictures as part of description). There are normal tears around the outer edges due to age but none that I can see in the stenciled area. These are intricately detailed, quite old but strong & still very dependable for operation.
