Description: Antique 19th century oil on canvas painting of a gentleman with his horse and dog attributed to British painter John E. Ferneley (1782-1860) in good condition. Lovely painting acquired from an estate in New Jersey. There is craquelure and an area on the back of the canvas that indicates a repair (photos #8, #10). There may be a signature beneath the frame, as I have been hesitant to remove it. Upper left panel has a small nick in the canvas as well (photo #9). Outer frame is heavy dark wood and appears to have been added later (original frame seems to be still intact). It is in fine condition. Recently conservatively appraised for $3,000-$4,000 at auction (appraisal available upon request). Truly delightful find for any collector. Approximate Measurements- (in frame) L- 30” H- 26.25” D- 2” Painting only L- 23.5” H- 19.5” John E. Ferneley was an English painter who specialised in portraying sporting horses and hunting scenes. Although his rendition of horses was stylised, he is regarded as one of the great British equine artists, second perhaps only to George Stubbs. His work is included in the collections of the Tate Gallery (London) and the National Museum of Racing (Saratoga), among others. * I have a pet and smoke-free home. Please view photos well. Additional photos available upon request. Thank you.
