In 1765, the Conceptionist Mothers occupied their magnificent convent despite the fact that the attached temple was not finished. Decades later, Don Zeferino Gutiérrez, commissioned by his chaplain, the RP Pedro Sandi Valdovinos, was the one who built the interior of the temple that lacked the transept and presbytery. Thus, as enough money was raised, it took the form that we know today as “The Nuns.” On February 8, 1880, the walls of the transept were finished and on August 15, 1882, the vaults of the transept, the presbytery and the main altar were blessed. Without a doubt, one of the most attractive works of Don Zeferino Gutiérrez is the dome of Las Monjas. Dr. Atl considered it to be similar to that of Les Invalides in Paris where Napoleon's remains rest. Surely, as in other works, it counted on the mastery of Don Estanislao Hernández and his officers, prestigious stonemasons from San Miguel. At the base of the dome there is a quarry that has the following legend: “This brickwork began on the 1st. of May and was completed on June 9, 1891.” At the same time, he built the main altar of the temple of San Juan de Dios. With this background and because the baroque tower of the parish of San Miguel Arcángel presented dangerous structural flaws, the first bishop of the Leonese Diocese, Don José de Jesús Diez de Sollano y Dávalos, decided that this tower be demolished and commissioned the new pseudo-Gothic portico of the parish to Don Zeferino. This mission, says Don Pepe López, was quite a challenge due to its proportions and magnitude, the lack of adequate materials, lack of technical equipment, the absence of specialized labor and, as if that were not enough, the lack of money. Don Zeferino and the PR Don José Ma. Correa, CO overcame the difficulties and left for future generations of San Miguel residents a work that, without being “a masterpiece,” has served and will serve as a symbol of the greatness of San Miguel de Allende. At the end of the 17th century, the old parish of San Miguel Arcángel was built, whose body was built in the shape of a Latin cross, facing north, with side chapels, the first for the Lord of the Conquest and in front for Our Lady of the Pains; Its author was the Architect Marcos Antonio Sobrarías. Later, in 1709, a tower with two sections was placed on its west side and in 1740 a tower with three sections on the opposite side. Good condition considering age and origin.
