Medusa's face is said to be so hideous that it could petrify those who met her eyes. Medusa is often depicted as a fearsome and grotesque creature, and her ability to turn people to stone made her a symbol of terror in Greek mythology. She met her end when the hero Perseus beheaded her with the help of divine gifts, including a mirrored shield, which allowed him to avoid her gaze. Medusa's severed head remained potent, and it played a role in other mythological events, such as helping to defeat the sea monster Cetus and later being used as a weapon.On the revers, the goddess Nike is depicted holding a wreath and a palm branch.
