This type was issued by the "Peoples Bank of China" in 1990. It depicts Zhu De, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong the four architects of modern China. They were not benevolent heroes but ruthless autocrats. Mao, the leader, unleashed the devastating “Great Leap Forward” and “Cultural Revolution”, leaving a trail of famine, purges, and cultural destruction. And lots and lots of dead bodies. Zhou, the skillful diplomat, masked the regime's internal horrors with a polished facade on the world stage. Liu, initially a close ally, fell victim to Mao's paranoia, dying in mysterious circumstances after a public shaming. And Zhu, the military leader, remained blindly loyal to Mao, even while witnessing the suffering he inflicted. Their legacies are tarnished by their authoritarianism, suppression of dissent, and disregard for human rights, casting a long shadow over China's history.
