From all of ourcasual inquiries, we got the same an-swer: The PBwould have a few new de-tails on it, but no major changes in theengine or suspension. If there was any-thing radically wrong with the 1980 PE,this would have been upsetting news;but, as a matter of fact, we liked lastyear’s bike quite a bit. So, that’s great;no major changes; no great excite-ment. We would wait and then test itlater on in the year.Okay, fine.Soon, the time came to test the newPE. We really paid very little attentionto it because, after all, it was the samebike, right?Eventually, we took it out for itsfirst ride and gave it the once-over aswe unloaded it from the truck. Thegraphics were different, and, what’sthis? There’s no skid plate this year!Instead, there is a pair of Six Days-typebash bars welded to the lower frametubes. One of our test riders sidled up,and we asked him for any comments. He said the pipe looked like a bathy-sphere. Hmmm. He also said the silen-cer looked like a bathysphere.Obviously, what we had before uswas a test rider with a deep-sea explora-tion fetish.References to underwater sports a-side, we gassed up and went for abreak-in ride. First off, we noticed thebars were weird. They seemed to bepulled back too far and didn’t allowthe rider to sit as forward as he should.Personal gripe. Some people mightlike the bars.We can’t think of anyone who’d likethe seat, though. It’s the same seat aslast year and it still has a couple ofproblems. For one thing, it’s shape istoo square. When you’re sitting down(and you only notice the seat whenyou’re sitting down. Odd, isn’t it?),the edges of the seat can be felt push-ing on the inside of your thighs. On a long ride this can become quiteuncomfortable. Also, for long-leggedriders, the seat is too short. Some ofour taller testers suffered taillightbruises on the butt after a trip throughthe whoopdies. A couple more inchesin length and some rounded edgeswould improve things a bunch.Neither the shift lever nor the rearbrake pedal have folding tips. Thisshould come as no surprise, as we’vebeen telling you this for two years.Suzuki must have a warehouse full ofthose shift levers, and maybe oncethey use them up, we’ll get somethingnew. We spent a little while toolingaround, getting the feel of things andletting the motor loosen up a little;then came back, gassed up, and wentfor a real ride.It didn’t take long until we started... 16873-AL-8107-22
