Description: 1919-1921 W514 - #30, Donnie Bush, Detroit Tigers - SGC 2 On the Player - Owen Joseph "Donie" Bush (1887–1972) was an MLB shortstop and later a coach and manager, most remembered for his long tenure with the Detroit Tigers. Debuting with the Tigers in 1908, Bush anchored their infield until 1921 before joining the Washington Senators for the final years of his playing career (1921–1923). He later managed and coached several teams, including the Senators (1923), Pittsburgh Pirates (1927–1929), Chicago White Sox (1930–1931), and Cincinnati Reds (1933). Known for his speed, defensive prowess, and patience at the plate, Bush was a formidable leadoff hitter who led the American League in walks five times, building an impressive on-base percentage despite a modest batting average. Often setting the stage for Hall of Fame teammates Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford, Bush was key in creating scoring opportunities. His 1914 defensive records of 425 putouts and 969 chances remain American League records for shortstops, with the 425 putouts also holding as the major league record. He led AL shortstops in assists five times and set a major league record with nine triple plays. Across his career, Bush earned a 39.4 WAR and posted a .250/.356/.300 slash line. On the Set - 1919 W514 - One hundred years ago, retailers such as grocery or candy stores had baseball sports cards available in strips for customers to buy, or to give away with purchases to loyal customers. As these “strip” cards often came in a long strip where merchants could cut or rip off a certain amount for customers, rough or uneven edges, and inconsistent card sizes were the norm. They are classified in the American Card Catalog as W-Cards. Of all strip cards, possibly the most popular strip set is the 1919-1921 W514 set. The W514 set is comprised of 120 cards measuring approximately 1-7/16" x 2-1/2". The card fronts portray a color drawing of each baseball player, with a color background and a thin black line surrounding the picture. The player’s name, team, and position are identified at the bottom of the card. Each card number is in small script within the frame, bottom right or left. Card backs are usually blank. Player drawings generally were modeled after photographs taken by famous photographer Charles Martin Conlon (1868-1945). Among thousands of photos, Conlon’s most famous photograph is of Ty Cobb stealing third base, sliding into a waiting Jimmy Austin.
