Description: Original ca early 1900s cabinet card mounted photo of a horse-drawn float through the streets of San Antonio, Texas, with “Wm. Basse Hardware Co., Agents Phoenix Horse Shoes and Bull Dog Toe Calks, Blacksmith and Auto Supplies.” The float has paused in front of Basse’s store (see upper right corner) on Main Plaza. The driver of the float is an African-American man, and a pyramid in the center of the float, along with the posts on the corners of the float, are covered with tools of all sorts. Another post at the center of the side facing the photographer has “Basse.” In the background can be seen the Shelley Undertaking Co. Basse’s 1914 obituary provides the following details: William Basse established the San Antonio hardware company in 1898; he had learned the hardware business as a young man in Fredericksburg; he married Louisa Wahrmund in 1874; he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a director of the Fiesta Assoc., a member of Harmonia Lodge of Hermann Sons, the Casino, Bexar Bowling Club, etc. Much more can be found online. The surname of Basse is well-known in San Antonio and, in spite of the damage, this is a wonderful historic photograph. Card is 8 x 10” and the image is 6 ¾ x 8 ½”. CONDITION: the upper corners of the card mount have been broken off and are missing; the lower left corner is very worn, the lower right corner is missing, and the lower and upper edges are also worn. The upper right corner of the photo is also missing. There is also random insect damage to the edges of the photo and a spot above the BA in the sign on the hardware building. NO LOCAL PICKUPS.
