Additional Information Dubbed the Rose of New England, Norwich was first settled in 1659, and the city bears a natural harbor at the confluence of the Yantic, Shetucket, and Quinebaug rivers which then flow south into the Thames River, eventually terminating at the Long Island Sound. The public landing in the harbor became a prominent economic driver for the city, and it prospered during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a hub for importing and exporting. Regular steamship service between New York and Boston further increased Norwich’s importance to the region’s economic growth, and by the later portions of the nineteenth century, it was a bustling town. This depiction was produced and published by the prolific O.H. Bailey, a pioneer of the birds-eye perspective style whose career spanned five decades into the 1920s. Bailey’s signature style and distinctive aesthetic are immediately recognizable and transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. These illustrations were used to promote prominent civic buildings as well as notable economic and geographic features to entice and attract residents and merchants alike. They were a widely popular style during the nineteenth and early twentieth century and are notable pieces of cartographical history.
