Description: Antique 1789 11th edition of Samuel Johnson's THE RAMBLER (11th Edition) volumes 2,3, and 4. A classic. Missing the 1st volume to complete the set. With an engraved frontispiece to each volume. Fair condition only, great for reading and well worth repairing. The Rambler was a periodical (strictly, a series of short papers) by Samuel Johnson, published on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 1750 to 1752 and totaling 208 articles. It was Johnson's most consistent and sustained work in the English language. Though similar in name to preceding publications such as The Spectator and The Tatler, Johnson made his periodical unique by using a style of prose which differed from that of the time period. The Rambler discussed subjects such as morality, literature, society, politics, and religion. Johnson included quotes and ideas in his publication from Renaissance humanists such as Desiderius Erasmus and René Descartes. His writings in The Rambler are considered to be neoclassical. Fair condition only, size 12mo (6 3/4 inches tall) in period calf bindings, extremely worn, missing the spine backstrips, hinges cracked, covers are still attached but hanging on a few threads. Some moderate foxing to the pages. The textblocks are reasonably tight, no loose or missing pages, no stamps or signatures, complete with : Vol. II: 304 pp; Vol. III: 319 pp; Vol. IV: 264 pp, index 32 pp. Engraved frontispiece to each volume. A reasonably priced 234 years old edition of a classic.
