Description: Condition as seen. Knoxville, Cal.Dec. 14th, 1864 Friend Keen, I thought I would take this opportunity to write you a few lines. I have had no answer to my last letter. You may not have got it or it may be on the road now. The mail is very irregular now. This rain has raised ____ _____ with the roads between here and Luisun. The mail comes now, semi occasionally as the saying is your last letter I got was wrote on Election Day I think. That great event has passed with less blood shed than copperheads threatened it would. This place seems quite out of the world now. The later dates we have in the news paper line is Dec. 3rd not very late that. But by the looks we are to have some fair weather now and we may get the mail more regular after this. This rain storm puts me in mind of what I had heard of rainy winters in this country before I came out here. The prospect is that I shall be out of work here before lone. I may have to come down to San Francisco to see you by the looks now as there is no lumber on hand and no prospect of my getting any for some time to come. I expect there is not much show for work there however I have just got a letter from home. The folds are alls well. Eddie has not got home yet but at the date of the letter was expected every day and has probably has arrived by this time. Clara says she heard you talked of returning to the states soon. How is that. They weren’t me that Mr. Clark says he will give me work at 9.50 per day if should go home. That is very good in him. I think although 9.50 in greenbacks seems rather small. I think if you are going I believe I shall go too although I do not think there is much certainty of your going as you have never said anything about it to me.Lamp Washburn has run away to sea so I hear. I supposed Old Washburn has been cutting up again. I wish you would send me up the pr ice of a short jointer, jack plane, a smoothing plane, and block plane. Our you have a chance to enquire as I have nothing more at present I will close hoping to hear from you soon. From your Friend,Wm. R. Scott
