Born on March 31, 1907 in Tonglu, China, despite growing up in poverty Ye developed a talent for drawing during childhood. He moved to Shanghai at the age of 18, working as both a fabric salesman and sign painter. Around this time, Ye began publishing comics in the journal Sanri Huabo, and in 1928, along with 8 other artists founded the magazine Shanghai Manhua. Nearly a decade later, Ye and fellow cartoonists Lu Shaofei and Zhang Guangyu organized the first national cartoon exhibition in Shanghai. During the Sino-Japanese War, the artist spent his time traveling China publishing Japanese-resistance cartoons. The artist went on to hold a number of exhibitions in the United States, and was later appointed as a professor at the Beijing Art Academy. In 1954, he was made head of the painting department of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. During the Cultural Revolution, Ye was accused of being a spy and unjustly imprisoned for 7 years. His name was not officially cleared until 1978. The artist died on May 5, 1995 in Beijing, China.
